Gravel driveways that don't wash out every spring.

A gravel driveway that fails usually fails at the base, not the surface. Too little excavation, no geotextile fabric, wrong stone size, no crown, and no drainage on the sides. The surface stone gets pushed into the subgrade and you're back to ruts and mud in two years.

RJL strips to the right depth, installs fabric where the subgrade calls for it, builds the base from proper crushed stone, and finishes with the right surface material. We build driveways that shed water, compact properly, and hold up through Western Mass winters without constant repair.

Layout and Assessment

We walk the driveway route, note the grade, any drainage concerns, and what the subgrade looks like. We look at whether you have soft spots, high water, or tree roots that need addressing before we put stone down.

Excavation and Base Prep

We strip the existing material to the depth the subgrade requires, typically 8 to 12 inches on a new installation. Any soft spots get excavated out and replaced. Geotextile fabric goes down where the subgrade warrants it.

Base Stone and Compaction

We bring in crushed gravel base course and compact it in lifts. The base is what makes the driveway last. We don't skip this step or rush it. Proper crown is established during this phase so the surface drains to both sides.

Surface Stone and Finish

We top with the surface material you've selected, grade it to crown, and clean up the edges. We also address any drainage ditches or culverts needed to keep water moving off the driveway and away from the road entrance.
